Parents are invited to “Discover Kindergarten” events and preschool open houses to learn how Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools gives children a solid foundation for learning.

Discover Heelan Night will be held Monday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at Bishop Heelan High School for all incoming students for the 2020-21 school year.

Crusader Cakes, Warming Shelter donations, a first-ever All Schools Mass for 1700 and a STEM night will be among the highlights of National Catholic Schools Week Jan. 26 - Feb. 1 for Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools. Activities focus on students, clergy, community service, academic growth and celebrating family.

School families are invited to cheer on five BHCS elementary teachers in a “Teachers Dash for Cash” at the Musketeers Hockey match Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7:05 p.m. to raise funds for their classrooms. The Musketeers will donate $3 from every ticket back to Mater Dei or Sacred Hear.

Parents, guardians, grandparents and retired teachers are invited to our first ever All-Schools Mass during Catholic Schools Week Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 9:45 a.m. at Bishop Heelan High School’s O’Gorman Fieldhouse.

Liz Meyer, the daughter of Dr. Steve and Dana Meyer, has been recognized as the December Rotary Student of the Month today. She is Student Council President, a National Merit Semifinalist, Student of the Year in Math and Science and scored a perfect 36 on her ACT.

A video scoreboard has been installed in the new Heelan gymnasium, thanks to donors who contributed nearly $20,000 in the Siouxland BigGive online giving event October of 2018.

Over two dozen sets of parents, including a number of Heelan alumni, are serving as Parent Ambassadors for our schools this year. The program -- to help new parents feel supported and comfortable in the Bishop Heelan School System -- started out with a picnic with new families in late August..

Parents are invited to their children's elementary school classrooms to hear teachers present at BHCS Curriculum Night Monday, Sept. 9. Identical sessions will be held at 6 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. to allow parents to see teachers in different grades.

Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools welcome back families and students to the new school year with the Hoopla Sunday August 25 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Field.

Schools in the Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools system will start the school year Friday, Aug. 23 and Monday, Aug. 26.

Mayra Padilla will join the Heelan School System as the new preschool teacher in the new dual Language Academy, set to open in fall. Antonia Maria Carreño, an experienced teacher with 28 years of teaching experience, will be teaching kindergarten students.

A new preschool program for 3-year-olds, the "Children's School," will open at Holy Cross-St. Michael School in fall. Monday, Wednesday and Friday sessions are filled, but there are still openings Tuesday and Thursday 8:15-11:30 a.m.

Support student athletics and activities by attending the Gold Club Kick-off Monday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Heelan Duffy Hall Commons and Auditoirum. After a Sneaky’s chicken dinner, coaches will talk and tours will be offered a sneak peak of the new Heelan gymnasium.

Sacred Heart School broke ground in July to install a new playscape area and prepare to add a basketball court and soccer field next spring.

Cory Kruse ‘11 and former Catholic school teacher, has been named new director of annual giving at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools. He is working with alumni, businesses and other community supporters to increase annual giving to the Spirit of Heelan Annual Fund and will assist the BHCS advancement team on the Heelan Gold Club, Heelan Auction and alumni communications.

A reception honoring the 50th anniversary of the ordination of Fr. Patrick Walsh, retired president of Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, will be held Saturday, June 8 at 2 to 4 p.m. at Heelan High School. Refreshments will be served in Duffy Hall Commons and the public is invited.

Parents can choose one of two sessions of a four-day “Science Classic” camp for their students entering grades 6-8: June 10-13 or July 8-11 at 9 a.m.-12 noon in the Heelan High School science classrooms.

A New Dual Language Academy will open in the Heelan CYO in fall where preschool and kindergarten students will learn through 80-90% Spanish instruction.

Nineteen Heelan boy and girls track athletes qualified to compete in the state tournament in Des Moines this week. Two competed in tennis. Hard work and practice have paid off!

A Heelan Boy’s Basketball All School Reunion will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 to celebrate nearly seven decades of athletics in the Heelan Pit. Returning players will be introduced at halftime with special tributes to the 3-peat 2009, 2010 and 2011 state champions.

Jenny Pattee has added the role of curriculum director to her enrollment management duties. In the new position, requested in the BHCS 2016 Strategic Plan, she will evaluate and further enhance a consistent curriculum plan in all Bishop Heelan schools.

Thanks to Iowa legislation and donors who made specific gifts in 2017, $640,253 was awarded in tuition grants to 414 students attending Bishop Heelan Schools this year.

It’s Merry Christmas for Holy Cross and Sacred Heart School teachers in the form of five classroom grants totaling $3,418 to benefit student learning. The grants are awarded to K-5 teachers who apply to the Excellence in Education program of the Siouxland Community Foundation to support local schools.

Student test scores shine brightly at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools. Recent data of Iowa Assessment Scores show excellent results for BHCS students in grades 3-11.

Heelan senior Katey Namanny has been named Heelan Rotary Student of the Month. The daughter of Steve and Chris Namanny, Katey is Student Council President, is on the Gold Honor Roll, and is ranked in the top 10 of her class.

Thirty-eight new students were inducted into the Heelan High chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony today at 2:30 p.m. in the Heelan High gym. The chapter now includes a total of 14 new seniors, 12 seniors inducted last year and 24 juniors.

The ACT Test results for the Heelan class of 2018 are in and our seniors ACT average composite is 24 -- a 1.2 point bump from the previous year.

Heelan advanced art students are painting a “Welcome to Sioux City” mural at Wesley Parkway and 3rd St. on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 8:30 a.m. till they finish.

Mater Dei is advancing its classroom technology this fall, using $47,500 in grant awards to fund student chromebooks, interactive projectors, flat screen TVs, wall mounted charging stations and Screenbeams for wireless classroom presentations.
